CHURCH OF DORMITION OF THE HOLY VIRGIN

15th century

Church of Dormition of the Holy Virgin is located on the Old cemetery in Smederevo. Based on its architectural style and its wall painting, there is a scientific opinion that it was built in the first half of 15th century, and frescopainted in second half of the 16th century. It is believed that it was a family church and crypt of despot Đurađ. Frescopainting is severely damaged.
By its form, manner of construction and decoration of the facade, this church belon gs to Morava school. Harmonious proportions of the church are emphasized by elongated octagonal dome and colonettes on the corners of polygonal apses.
Wall painting, that has all the attributes of frescopainting of the second half of the 16th century, by its iconography and thematics relies on the painting of 14th century. In the dome there are Christ Pantocrator, Heaven liturgy and Old Testament Prophets. On the ceilings and upper areas are cycles from the life and passion of Christ, and beneath of them there are saints. Iconostasis is from the beginning of the 19th century. Icons are the art of a number of artists, but the most significant are the ones done by Nikola Apostolović
